MONTE OLIVETO MAGGIORE
The Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore is a place of extraordinary beauty and spirituality situated in the heart of the Crete Senesi. Founded in 1313 by Bernardo Tolomei, the abbey is the principal monastery of the Benedictine order of Monte Oliveto and represents an important center of culture, art, and faith.
HISTORY AND FOUNDATION
In 1313, Bernardo Tolomei, along with two companions, Patrizio Patrizi and Ambrogio Piccolomini, decided to retreat to an isolated place to dedicate themselves to prayer and meditation. They chose a wooded hill, known as Monte Oliveto, in homage to the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. Here, they founded a small hermitage which, over the years, transformed into a large abbey, becoming a point of reference for monastic life in Italy.
ARCHITECTURE AND ART
The abbey is a magnificent example of Gothic-Renaissance architecture, with a series of buildings developed around a large cloister. Among the most notable architectural elements are:
The Church: Built between the 14th and 15th centuries, it features a richly decorated interior with frescoes and sacred artworks.
The Great Cloister: Adorned with a cycle of frescoes by Sodoma and Luca Signorelli, illustrating the life of Saint Benedict.
The Library: Houses a vast collection of ancient manuscripts, incunabula, and rare books.
The Refectory: A large room where the monks gather for meals, decorated with frescoes and stuccoes.
MONASTIC LIFE
The Olivetan monks follow the Rule of Saint Benedict, dedicating themselves to prayer, work, and community life. The abbey is also known for the production of wine, olive oil, and other agricultural products, which are cultivated in the surrounding lands managed by the monks.
HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM
Monte Oliveto Maggiore is open to visitors who wish to explore the artistic and spiritual heritage of the abbey. Visitors can participate in liturgies, visit the museums and historic buildings, and enjoy the tranquility of the place.
